 The Breakdown

Suzette is a down-on-her-luck former groupie who is fired from her job as a bartender.  Lost and nostalgic for her younger days, she decides to take a road trip to find her former roommate and best friend Lavinia.  On the way she picks up the neurotic (and totally surprising) Harry played by Geoffrey Rush.  While Suzette is still sowing her wild oats, Lavinia is on the straight and narrow with the husband, big house, and two beautiful daughters.  The reunion doesn't go as planned, but the two women reconnect with who they are and find hope in the future.

 The Scorecard

The Swoon Factor |

Emily's Thoughts - While Suzette is often awkwardly seducing Geoffrey Rush, there's not really much romantic swoon to this particular story.  I would argue that old friendships and connections that remain a fixed point in the lives of two women despite distance, time, and two very diverging roads is a bit swoony.

Watson's Thoughts - I've never thought of Geoffrey Rush as adorable before.

The Feels Factor |

Emily's Thoughts - Perhaps, after living in a year that has been turned upside down by the unexpected, I better understand the nostalgia of days passed.  I know it's not the same thing, but I think we each long for life to be like it once was - the friends across the hall in college or the carefree days of childhood.  That want brings out the feels.  The unexpected Geoffrey Rush and his awkward, lonely, and yet strangely open personality brought out a lot of feels as well.  He was very tender with Suzette on several occasions when his anti-social tendencies could have pushed her away.

Watson's Thoughts - I fell in love with Suzette as soon as she went all Mama Bear when she saw her friend's daughter in trouble, even though she had never met the daughter before.  There was some serious supportive women in this movie, even when their lives are 7 kinds of screwed up.

The Skeez Factor |

Emily's Thoughts - One could demonize Lavinia's husband for putting her in a box and placing stereotypical expectations on her suburban life, but his acceptance once she finally opens up kept the movie rather skeez free.

Watson's Thoughts - No real skeez here.  I kinda hated Vinnie's family a few times, but you're supposed to.

The Re-Watchability Factor |

Emily's Thoughts - This was a different Goldie than the one I've been watching all month.  A bit more rough around the edges, a raspy voice, much less ditzy.  I liked this Goldie.  I'm not a HUGE fan of Susan Sarandon (except for Bull Durham), so I'm not sure this would be a rewatch for me.  Maybe if I come across it on TNT one day?  Just not sure I'd seek it out.

Watson's Thoughts - I enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I would.  Unlike Emily I am a big Susan Sarandon fan.  Seeing her break back out of her shell was fantastic.  I may have couch danced along during the club scene.  I did want to see the younger daughter get more of a kick in the butt, she really deserved one.

Does this movie receive the Total Weirdos stamp of approval?
