- TAGLINE | "It's a highly dangerous comedy!!"
A librarian finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery just because she is told to "loosen up" and start dating around. After picking up a hitchhiker, she is chased by a series of men who believe she is holding something important. After several close calls, enter the police in the form of a bumbling womanizer.
The Swoon Factor |
Watson's Thoughts - Not much to swoon over here, but to be honest I'm not a fan of Chevy Chase. I was mostly impressed that after spending the night with Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn wakes up with perfectly styled hair. Is this a movie superpower? And if so, how do I get it?
Emily's Thoughts - Does swooning over a library count? I'm counting it. Guys, it counts because libraries are awesome and everyone should take the time to get a public library card. Goldie's "librarian" style was also swoony at time.
The Feels Factor |
Watson's Thoughts - Librarian research saves the day! But I'm pretty sure my heart was won by Goldie Hawn's elderly, blackbelt having, snake owning landlord.
Emily's Thoughts - But Watson - why did there have to be a snake! That gave me anti-feels. Why couldn't the elderly, blackbelt having neighbor own a goat?
The Skeez Factor |
Watson's Thoughts - Most of the skeez was intentional, Chevy Chase's character was set up to be the 'womanizer with a heart of gold' type. I went into this one expecting a lot of librarian stereotypes, but there was actually very little about Goldie Hawn's job, except for one great scene where her coworker finds an important clue by researching at the library!
Emily's Thoughts - Here's the problem with Chevy Chase. Wait. Here's ONE problem with Chevy Chase. Watson hit it on the nose that his character is intentionally skeezy. But then there's a goofy charm to him at times which just ups the skeez game. He could be the "awe shucks" guy that is adorably dorky, but he consistently plays the womanizer over and over again. Even when he IS the adorably dorky guy he's a jerk.
The Re-Watchability Factor |
Watson's Thoughts - This was a fun film noir style send up of old detective movies, but it's missing the kookie element of something like Clue. I don't know that I will add it to my rewatch list.
Emily's Thoughts - Very little character development and an even weaker plot. I just stuck around for the neighbor and Goldie's brass knuckle wearing librarian friend with all the sass. Probably not a rewatch for me.
Does this movie receive the Total Weirdos stamp of approval?
