- TAGLINE | "Her dream was to coach high school football. Her nightmare was Central High.
A fish out of water sports ball movie with a feminine touch. Molly the track coach has a dream of taking over a JV football team only to be shot down by a tiny prick of a man who instead gets her a job at the cliche inner city school. Populated by cast of rather colorful characters, she whips the boys into shape and makes some poor parenting choices along the way. The movie, of course, culminates with the big game.
The Swoon Factor |
Emily's Thoughts - No romance! Go Goldie! There is an over-sexed Wesley Snipes who is a 35 year old high school senior, but...
Watson's thoughts - I enjoyed the fact that there was no romance in this. There was just an adult woman dealing with her career and family.
The Feels Factor |
Emily's Thoughts - Mostly extreme annoyance at men who think they can belittle and/or control a woman. Most of the movie is about putting Goldie's character in her place, and while she perseveres, the come-uppance at the end is a little lukewarm, especially with her horrible ex-husband.
Watson's Thoughts - The ex-husband and the uber-misogynist coach made me want to throw things repeatedly. Most of the heartwarming moments were undercut pretty quickly with humor. But it always nice to see man-babies get smacked down.
The Skeez Factor |
Emily's Thoughts - Men can be real jerks. Men who want to control women are even big jerks. Jerks are skeezy. Lots of skeez.
Watson's Thoughts - Goldie Hawn's ex-husband was a fantastic example of gaslighting. He is constantly making it seem like Goldie is the one being dramatic or a problem. I really enjoyed seeing him get punched. There is also the 'white savior' factor. Goldie Hawn coming in to help the poor inner city kids in Chicago.
The Re-Watchability Factor |
Emily's Thoughts - Probably not, but definitely one of the better Goldie movies I've seen so far.
Watson's Thoughts - This one wasn't terrible, but I don't think it needs a rewatch. If I have to watch a sportsball movie, I would go for Remember the Titans or A League of Their Own
Does this movie receive the Total Weirdos stamp of approval?
